A Fresh Repertoire for Today’s Pianists

Music College is pleased to introduce its Piano Syllabus for 2027–2028, featuring an exciting selection of repertoire designed to inspire students at every stage of their musical development.The new programme brings together a broad range of piano music, combining established masterpieces with contemporary compositions, popular music, arrangements and music from different cultures and traditions. Our aim is to give students an opportunity to discover music they enjoy while developing the technical and musical skills required to become confident pianists.The syllabus covers Initial Level through Grade 8, providing a structured pathway for learners as they progress from their first experiences at the piano through to advanced performance.

A Repertoire with Something for Everyone

Students can expect a diverse collection of musical styles and periods. The programme includes works from the great composers of the classical tradition alongside more recent compositions and arrangements inspired by popular culture, film, television and contemporary music.We believe that variety is an important part of musical education. Exposure to different composers, styles, rhythms and musical ideas encourages students to broaden their musical understanding while discovering the types of music that motivate them to practise and perform.Traditional and folk influences from different parts of the world also form part of the wider repertoire, giving students an opportunity to experience music beyond the familiar Western classical tradition.

Developing the Complete Pianist

Learning a piece of music is about much more than simply playing the correct notes.Our piano programme encourages students to develop:

• Technique and coordination
• Rhythm and musical accuracy
• Expression and interpretation
• Dynamic control and phrasing
• Sight-reading ability
• Aural awareness
• Scales, arpeggios and technical fluency
• Confidence in performance

Students are encouraged to understand the music they play rather than simply memorising notes. Teachers can use the repertoire as a starting point for developing musicianship, creativity and an appreciation of different musical styles.

Opportunities for Different Playing Abilities

Music College recognises that every pianist is different. Students may have different physical abilities, learning styles and musical strengths.Where appropriate, the programme provides opportunities for repertoire that can be performed using one hand, alongside conventional two-handed piano works. This gives students greater flexibility when selecting music and allows repertoire choices to be matched more closely to individual circumstances and abilities.

A successful piano programme needs more than a list of pieces. Students benefit from having access to useful learning materials that help them understand, practise and perform their repertoire.Music College will provide guidance and supporting material to help students approach their pieces effectively. Depending on the level and requirements of the course, resources may include:

• Sight-reading and aural development activities

These resources are intended to complement lessons with the student's teacher and encourage effective practice between lessons.

Building Confidence Through Performance

Performance is an important part of learning an instrument.Throughout their studies, Music College students are encouraged to perform for others in an environment appropriate to their level. This may include informal class performances, concerts, examinations or other performance opportunities.Regular performance helps students develop concentration, confidence and the ability to communicate their musical ideas to an audience.

Preparing for Musical Examinations

Students who wish to pursue formal examinations can follow a structured programme from Initial Level through Grades 1–8.Music College offers preparation for examinations through recognised examining organisations, including ABRSM and Trinity College London, where appropriate. Our teachers work with each student to develop the technical, theoretical and performance skills needed for their chosen examination, while ensuring that lessons remain enjoyable and musically rewarding.
